Samskruti Talks | Sustainable Development Goals

Speaker : Dr. V.M. Tiwari, Former – Director, NGRI, Hyderabad


Dr. Tiwari covered three main points in his talk :

  • People,

  • Prosperity , and

  • Planet


Under the aegis of U N, 70 sustainable goals have been identified.  The pandemic COVID-19 made us realize the the solution to problems are to be found locally.


Supply Chains :

After the opening up   of the economy in early 1990’s, it has become clear that if we want to make progress, we have to be digitally enabled and articulate. Just within one year, there is a change involving INDUSTRY 5.0

  • Involving society in the process of development is the new change.

  • When servicing Society Goals are envisaged, convergence between Social Scientists, and Society is required.

  • International community of scientific union is a step in the right direction.

  • Within two years, social scientists have found their way into it.

  • Think globally - Solve problems locally is the Mantra

  • Atmanirbhar Bharat and Local for Vocal means that society can’t now be left behind.

  • Geo-sciences, Earth System Sciences, science of atmosphere, hydrosphere, all relate to sustainability.

  • We use electricity and water extensively.

  • In the sustainable goals among the 70, several relate to climate change which affects day to day life.

  • 5-6 areas indirectly relate to other aspects (like zero hunger.).

  • Poverty eradication, clean water, sanitation.

 

The origin of life is WATER.

  1. Clean water is required for drinking and also for Agriculture.

  2. 90% water is used for Agriculture.

  3. Out of this, 60-70 % is drawn from the ground.

  4. We have an urgent need to consider sustainability.

  5. Polluted water can lead to deterioration of health, sanitation and increased contamination. Food grains are also getting contaminated.

  6. In Bihar and West Bengal, Arsenic is found in food-grains. That needs urgent attention.


How do we work on Water issues to improve its quality and sanitation?

  1. Sulphur Fluoride can find ways to reach different places.

  2. Among different ways of reduction of harmful effects of highly polluted water, diluting it with fresh water recharge is one effective way.

  3. We cannot depend entirely (100%) on government to address the problems. Civil Society has its responsibility to help in controlling pollution.

  4. More than 50% of India is under stress on the availability of water.

  5. 10 Crore people live in areas with poor water quality which is leading to health problems.

  6. Coastal areas have salinity ingress.

  7. Societal plans need to be formulated for clean water availability.
